Dan,
Good morning and I wanted to provide you a quick update from the Syracuse University men’s soccer office. With only two weeks left until the boys report for pre-season camp we are finalizing our training program and taking a final deep breath before the fun really starts. At this stage of the summer there is always an excitement and anticipation in our office as we countdown to camp. Everyone associated with our men’s soccer team is looking forward to the season and embracing the challenges that lay ahead.
This season also marks the 30th Anniversary of our 1982 BIG EAST Championship team and I hope that you will be able to join us here on campus this fall to celebrate the accomplishments of this very special team. Under the guidance of head coach Alden Shattuck this remarkable group of players secured a 17-3-2 record. A 3-2 victory over St. John’s in the BIG EAST Tournament set up a final match-up with Boston College in a game that went to six overtimes. (Yes that was not a typing error…. Jim Powers scored in the sixth overtime to secure a 1-0victory and the 1982 BIG EAST Title!) Marcello Vitale (14goals, 11 assists) provided the cutting edge to this team and Joe Papaleo registered 13 clean sheets on his way to All-American honors. I will shortly share with you additional details regarding our plans to celebrate the accomplishments of the 1982 BIG EAST Championship Team
I hope that our current crop of players will take confidence (and tremendous pride) in the accomplishments of the 1982 squad. I know that our 2012 team will work hard to make all of our fans proud of their own efforts this fall.
I would like to ask all of our supporters to join our current fundraising efforts and Friends of SU Soccer as we look to further elevate our SU soccer program and build a championship caliber program here at Syracuse University. Your support really can (and will) make a difference in the future of our student-athletes.
Thank you for your continued support of the program and please keep cheering on the boys!
